It has been a month since I am living in the Kashmir Valley. When I decided to study at CUK. There were many things on my mind, People around me like friends and well-wishers were also questioning my decision, because of Political instability, and one of the most militarized regions in the world.
They are right in their views about Kashmir and the Kashmiri people because, in this modern world, People's views are shaped by the media and social media. Mainstream media tells different kinds of stories about Kashmir. and Our social media is based on Artificial intelligence, they work in a certain way that promotes one side's content and facts. So People are deprived of a diverse range of facts. So it was not their failure. The fault lies within the system.
There were many challenges for me also, like different geographical and climatic conditions, culturally different areas, and a Politically uncertain region. However, every challenge has so many opportunities to learn and it gives you an immense kind of experience.
Let's keep these things aside for a while I am more interested in the everyday life of the everyday people. It was the everyday life of the People, which attracted me the most anywhere in the world. before coming to Kashmir I had been living in Delhi. I have traveled to different states, read books, and articles watched movies and documentaries, and during this period a few questions were hunting me. What are the things people do? Why do they do this? And how do they do these things? what is the nature of a human being?
Around the world people do five to six major things. Or let's say these are the purpose of the people life. Since we are living in an industrial world, where everything has monetary value. that means we are living in a highly marketed society. To buy things even for survival, you are required to do a job. It can be physical or mental.
That means in today's world most people do things for their survival. and it comes under "economic activity". According to the UNDP, there are 1.2 billion multidimensionally Poor. These number shows that there are people who still struggling to survive. Here we are not talking about middle-class people who somehow lead their life.
According to Brookings institutions, there are 45% of the population come under the middle class. So, in reality, people don't have time to do political, social, and cultural activities. Apart from economic activity, people are also interested in social, Political, cultural, religious, or scientific activities. People don't want to be formal every time. There are many things they want to do informally. After the evolution of the state and market, the world has become more like a formal place. It looks like society has lost its flexibility.
Now coming to the second part, why do People do things? Several causes drive people to do things. Survival .Any kind of Power, Pleasure, fame, Passion Honor and Prestige, service, to live for other people(Any kind:- Social, economic, Political, Cultural, Religious, Sexual, Administrative, etc. ) irrespective of caste, class, Religion, race, or Gender, these things are suitable for everyone.
If around the world Peoples purposes are the same. They pursue the same thing and want some kind of meaning in their life. then why do people fight? If they were fighting for Survival, Power, and more control over the resources then it is a different matter but if they were fighting over culture, Religion, Honor, prestige, service, Passion, or about the way of life then it is the most foolish act. Even if people fight for Power, their acts cannot be justified.
Now we come to the third part, how do they do things? There are multiple ways to go to the same spot and so there are multiple ways to do the same things. But the difference lies here. When people say their way is correct, yeah, you are right you can go but if they say only their way is correct and every people should go this way only, then the problem arises and the People start fighting.
Here in Kashmir, where I am living for more than a month, the only difference I notice is that their ways are different. they have their way to do things. Their food habit, language, lifestyle, architecture, and culture are different from mine, and my culture's lifestyle, and language, are also alien to them. Why do we fight over these things?
According to Hobbs human nature is inherently selfish, nasty, brutish, and violent but according to Rousseau human nature is innately kind, noble, and cooperative. Anthropologist David Graeber in his new book 'the dawn of everything' has suggested that we should move from this debate about human nature. He says humans are neither devils nor angels. Humans are just humans like the rest of us. He has given so much evidence in his book, to support his arguments. so, We should get rid of any preconceived notions about human nature.
If we will focus on why people do particular things, then our world will become dry and dull. Instead of focusing on why we should pay attention to how people do these things. If you are fascinated by other people, cultures, and societies then you will be amazed to see that, there is so much thrill here.
Every human being is different and everyone has a unique story. Just you need to listen, to them patiently. and if you have time and resources then go and explore a new culture, listen to their stories, and share yours. What are you waiting for? If you are waiting for the right time then it will never come.
